Saunderites

Saunderites is located between Daviesites and Northbrook, with beautiful views across the playing fields.

The Ben Travers Theatre is very close by, and it is just a short walk to the Queen’s Sports Centre and the Central Dining Room.

Saunderites is the ‘senior’ House in the School. It is named after its first Housemaster, Dr Saunders, who was also Headmaster from 1832 to 1853.

Austin Hill is our new Head of Saunderites, having served as Deputy Head of Saunderites for the past three years.

Following an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and French, Austin went on to study a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics at Reading University, and then subsequently completed an MSc in Learning and Teaching from Kellogg College, Oxford. Austin has extensive experience in academic management, having been a Head of Mathematics for 10 years at HMC boarding schools, including two years at Charterhouse.

Austin enjoys getting involved in all aspects of school life, whether that be coaching netball and tennis, or helping with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. Austin particularly enjoys anything that involves problem‑solving, origami, and puzzles. He moves into Saunderites with his wife, Kelly, and young daughter, Anaís.

Saunderites live by the motto 'Work Hard, Get Involved, and Take Responsibility'. It encourages every Saunderite to make the most of the wealth of opportunities available at Charterhouse while contributing positively to House life. Within our warm and welcoming community, high standards of behaviour, punctuality, and mutual respect enable everyone to flourish.
It is my aim that every Saunderite leaves with an understanding that success is measured not only by academic achievement, but also by character and how they treat others. By embracing service and considering the needs of others, they help create a House community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. My hope is that they leave Charterhouse equipped for whatever comes next and inspired to lift where they stand, making a positive difference wherever life takes them.

Saunderites is one of the friendliest Houses at Charterhouse. Although boarding school will be unavoidably daunting to those coming here for the first time, the Head of House and all the pupils try to make the transition from prep school as easy as possible.
With a sociable atmosphere, Saunderites is prominent on all fronts, and I feel very fortunate to be part of it.
